Parkmobile adds NFC to its parking payment repertoire
Let’s face it, whether you’re down at the laundromat or feeding the meter on a busy street, you can never find enough quarters when you need’em. Know what effectively sidesteps that lack of foresight? NFC, that’s what. And that tap-to-pay convenience is ready to roll out for folks in Oakland, CA courtesy of Atlanta-based Parkmobile. There’s no great mystery to the company’s purpose — the name says it all — as it specializes in payment solutions for (what else?) parking. With the installment of special near field-equipped stickers on meters throughout that West Coast city, fine-fearing citizens will now have one extra payment option beyond the outfit’s currently available mobile app and internet transactions. Naturally, you’ll have to sign-up online to get started, but after that you’ll never have to fear the meter maid again.

Wireless Industry Association Opposes Bill That Would Require Warrant For Them To Turn Data Over To Law Enforcement
You would think that it would be in the mobile operators’ best interest to protect their own customers’ privacy and to stand up for their basic rights. You would think, but apparently you’d be wrong. It appears that CTIA — the mobile operators’ industry association — is opposing an effort in California to require mobile operators to require a warrant before disclosing personal info. The bill also requires some basic reporting requirements for the companies, having them say how often info has been disclosed (hardly onerous info to track). Basically, the law asks that the mobile operators respect the 4th Amendment when dealing with law enforcement — something that the federal government has been successfully chipping away at for years.
But the CTIA is against all of this (pdf), claiming that it would be “confusing” for mobile operators.

The crux of the “confusion” apparently is that the definitions in the bill are somewhat broader than what the industry says is standard, and they’re afraid that this means “It could place providers in the position of requiring warrants for all law enforcement requests.” I’m struggling to see what the problem is here. What’s wrong with requiring warrants?
The letter also fails to explain why the reporting requirements would be so “burdensome,” other than the claim that providers already “are working day and night to assist law enforcement to ensure the public’s safety and to save lives.” So, if I read this right, they’re arguing that they’re already so busy responding to law enforcement that telling users that your personal data is being handed over to the government willy nilly is, you know, too much effort.
The ACLU is calling out the industry for this move — noting that it seems to have no problem spending all these resources passing on all of our info — why can’t it spend a little defending its subscribers’ rights too?
California is supposed to vote on this bill shortly. Hopefully, the state sees through these baseless claims from CTIA.

Elephant Quest is an addictive, deep platformer
When someone tells me about a “platformer”, my first thought is that it’s probably a simple game that mainly revolves around running and jumping around, with a minimal plot. [Play a Zelda game! -Ed]
Elephant Quest is one platformer that managed to prove me completely wrong. Yes, you do run and jump around, and you also shoot at stuff. But the game has much, much more going for it.
Basically, as you run, jump and shoot, you gain experience points and level up. Hitting Space brings you into an interface where you can convert your experience points into Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Dexterity points. Once you’ve “specialized” your points, you then get to pick what exact skills you’d like to enhance in each field. For example, you could use your dexterity to enhance your weapons or increase your swiftness.
The game is played in a huge maze; you go through rooms using doors, and there’s a large map. As the name implies, there are quests you can take, too. For example, one quest had me searching all over the place for ten balloons.
The bottom line is that this is a surprisingly deep game that just might ensnare you for a good bit longer than you intended to play. Beware!

Skype 5.3 for Windows released, improves mobile video call quality
Version 5.3 of Skype for Windows has just been released, with the main emphasis of the new release being improved call quality, and the quality of video received by mobile Skype users. Presumably one party of the video call must be using Skype for Windows 5.3, though.
Beyond improved call quality, not much has changed. You can now see your friends’ presence icons when contact cards are collapsed, and the topic editing button is now always visible on the conversation header. For a complete list of changes, hit up the Skype Garage blog.

200 movies available to rent for 5p in the UK on HTC Watch this weekend
If you're in the UK and have a high-end HTC phone or tablet, you'll want to check the bundled HTC Watch application this weekend. HTC has 200 movies available to rent for just 5p this weekend, as part of its HTC Watch 5p Weekend Special. HTC Watch has grown considerably since it first appeared on the Sensation last year, which means there's a surprisingly good selection of flicks on offer as part of the 5p deal (we've got the full list after the break.)
Unfortunately we're not seeing any sign of any similar deals on our US-bound HTC devices, but if the promotion proves a success on this side of the pond, there's a chance we may see it expanded to other territories.
